There’s one in most kitchen renovations – an awkward corner that no one is sure what to do with! We’ve solved this issue countless times over the last decade with the following three solutions.
1. Create an ‘Appliance garage’
This is a storage area for all those appliances in the kitchen that get messy – the toaster, kettle, coffee maker etc. Carve out shelving of different heights to house them all, and add a pocket door so the whole thing looks like an extension of your utility cupboards. Easy to slide closed when you want the kitchen to look tidier, people will have no idea what sits behind it!
2. Leave it open for aesthetics
Continue your bench space around the corner, particularly if you have a beautiful marble worktop or other striking material you want to showcase. Then you can use the corner area to display those aesthetic appliances that are so beautiful, you want them on show. Just make sure the aesthetics are consistent, to keep the space looking sleek and uncluttered.
3. Just avoid it!
There is a simpler solution, and that’s to lose the corner all together running your bench across one wall and having another full wall for your utility cupboards. This is a solution for the true minimalists, and make sure the kitchen is still functional and efficient without that handy extra corner space.
While we’re discussing awkward kitchen corners, you might be wondering what to do under the bench space. Our advice would be to have one corner with drawers and the other as a deep cupboard. Avoid those double-hinged cabinets at all costs, they are impractical and always seem to be hanging open and broken
