During one of our Kitchen Masterclass sessions, a student had an interesting question which comes up a lot in kitchen renovations.
They asked, in a somewhat small kitchen, how would they know whether to cover up the window or not? They stated that it would make the overall layout more efficient and easier to design, but obviously the con to the plan is losing the window and its natural light. This student presented this quandary with a kitchen design plan and asked for our expert advice.
The student provided a 3D visual of their planned kitchen, which made it easy for Georgina to sketch over with her annotations. She responded with a version of this kitchen where the functional zones are consolidated with the fridge and tall utilities grouped together, and the island is extended giving more prep space and seating. This is the best way to achieve efficiency in the kitchen while retaining the lovely window. Georgina also removed the upper cupboards (because most people can’t reach the top shelf in these anyway) and this frees up the walls and allows the window to breathe. Another bonus of keeping the window is having a nice view to look out to, while you’re doing the washing up!
