In small homes or terraced properties, often the centre of the plan can be a dark area that feels claustrophobic without any natural light. This is the central courtyard’s time to shine!

This interiors element is a light-filled courtyard in the centre of your home that introduces fresh air and energy, and links the other rooms in the house.

To make it work, we recommend installing doors and windows to either side of the courtyard, so natural light and ventilation can get through. This also brightens those traditionally dark areas of the building.

You should treat your central courtyard as another outside space and plant a tree – it can add a refreshing pop of green and an element of nature in a small space! String pretty lighting around the tree and it give a chandelier effect and softly light the surrounding area. Another design trick is to hang mirrors on the courtyard walls; this bounces extra light into the adjacent spaces and makes the centre of the plan feel bright and spacious.

For maximum visual impact, make sure your courtyard is overlooked by the living and dining spaces in your home. Everyone loves a green view while they’re eating and relaxing.

It might feel challenging to add a courtyard to your plan, but trust us, it really is worth it.
